Although the growing presence of troops around Ukraine has raised alarms of a full-scale invasion by Russia, the latest United States intelligence claims that not all military personnel may be aligned to the speculated plans of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Further, the alleged Russian officials are worried about the repercussion that a large-scale invasion would bring. They believe it will be costly and difficult for Putin and Kremlin leaders to realize per US intelligence, CNN reported.
Another thing being pointed out is the fact that their so-called plans being discovered and exposes publicly by western nations has also left most grumbling.
Despite the claims of these latest US intelligence reports, this is no assurance that officials would stand down or revolt against the marching orders of Putin. Further, Russia has a professional military that would be expected to effectively carry out Putin's orders.
"In the assessments we see it is clear some people on the [Russian] defense side are not really understanding what the game plan is," the official said. The official added that the assessments suggest the defense personnel think "it's a very difficult game plan to stand up," a senior European official reportedly stated.
In a previous post, it was reported how Putin has allegedly already assembled 70% of the military personnel and weapons on Ukraine’s borders. This could be enough to launch a full-scale invasion and possibly take over the Ukraine capital, Kyiv.
"We've long said that Putin continues to add to his options and capabilities, and we've been equally transparent about some of the moves we believe he intends to make to justify some sort of military action," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a previous report.
"We're also going to continue to help Ukraine better defend itself with both lethal and non-lethal assistance," he added.
Hence, it all becomes a waiting game between the US, Russia and Ukraine. But if an invasion does ensue, it is expected to be devastating with civilians caught in the crossfire.
