Things do not appear to be looking up as far as the feared possible Russian invasion of Ukraine is concerned. U.S. Intelligence is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has everything in place to launch one.
This is based on the latest intelligence assessments by the United States although officials remain cautious on how they were able to come up with it, CNN reported.
They are aware that the Russia-Ukraine issues are very sensitive. The assessment claims that Putin has already assembled 70% of military personnel and weapons on Ukraine’s borders, potentially enough to launch a full-scale attack.
In all, the development is clear that the buildup is sending mixed signals to the U.S. and Ukraine. But in the end, the potential loss of the life of civilians is expected to be massive should an invasion materialize.
Thus, Putin and U.S. president Joe Biden are in a chess match of their own with Ukraine inhabitants potentially caught in the crossfire. Biden and the U.S. team are considering various scenarios and also weighing in on potential outcomes.
"There's a potential they could launch on very little warning," Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley warned at a news conference on January 28, offering a brutal assessment.
"Given the type of forces that are arrayed ... if that was unleashed on Ukraine, it would be significant, very significant, and it would result in a significant amount of casualties," Milley said. "You can imagine what that might look like in dense urban areas, along roads, and so on and so forth. It would be horrific. It would be terrible," he added.
At any rate, any development tied to the issue will be very sensitive. The U.S. needs to be careful with its assessment and just be prepared for the worse. As far as Russia is concerned, it all depends on what Putin has going on in his mind right now.
