Matt Reeves unveiled Robert Pattinson’s first look in his Batsuit last week. The “Batman” director shared a short 48-second clip of the actor’s camera test but that was enough to give away some major details regarding the new Batman costume design.
Robert Pattinson has been named as the new Caped Crusader and based on the glimpses offered by the camera test clip, he looks good on his new Batsuit. It appears that he will soon be helping people on the streets of Gotham in style but loaded with advanced armory.
The red light-drenched footage also panned for a close-up view of the new bat emblem on the Batsuit’s chest. As per Tech Radar, the bat symbol is a key detail and theorized that it is actually a remodeled gun that was used by Joe Chill in the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents.
It was said that this design was probably inspired by Kevin Smith and Jim Lee’s story from the Detective Comics 1000 that came out last year. In any case, here’s how Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit compares to the previous suits in the famous “Batman” movies.
Christian Bale and Ben Affleck
Christian Bale starred in Christopher Nolan's “The Dark Knight” trilogy that started in 2005. His suit has been described as more like an “armor-plated wet suit.” Screen Rant added that his costume also features pointy-eared cowl that was more of a helmet and Pattinson's has more similarities to a standard mask that will not provide much protection if hit.
Ben Affleck's costume in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” gave him a bulky look. It looks like plastic where the actor could have had a hard time turning his head without moving his whole body. It was not the perfect Batsuit but from the neck going upward, Affleck’s has a strong resemblance with Pattinson’s newly-designed suit.
Val Kilmer and George Clooney
Val Kilmer was Bruce Wayne in “Batman Forever” while George Clooney appeared as the caped hero in “Batman and Robin” both directed by Joel Schumacher. And their costumes have very little to no similarity to Robert Pattinson’s suit and in fact, Kilmer’s will always be remembered for its version with the “muscled nipple” while the newest suit is more functional than more fashionable.
Pattinson's features more functions minus the excessive moldings to highlight body contours. On the other hand, Clooney’s has a metallic finish and obviously hard to use. The new suit is more comfortable and has places for everything like the armor, cowl and cape.
Michael Keaton
Michael Keaton’s “Batman” costume was sculpted by Jose Fernandez. He wore a Batsuit that resembles the character’s original costume complete with the bat emblem in yellow background. Obviously, this is far from Robert Pattinson’s modernized version.
Overall, the differences in all of the previous and new Batsuits include the functions, materials used and the central symbol of the bat that has evolved since the original film. The contrasts probably resulted from the fact that each film tells a story featuring the different sides of Bruce Wayne and his history in various eras.
Robert Pattinson’s “The Batman” is set to premiere on June 25, 2021.
