Ricky Martin is not keeping quiet after the gruesome mass shooting that occurred Sunday morning at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla. Described as the worst massacre in U.S. history, the crime committed by Florida resident Omar Mateen left 50 dead (including himself) and over 50 wounded.
In the midst of the tragic news, the Puerto Rican singer, who publicly came out as gay in 2010, sent a powerful message in solidarity with the victims. "I Am Gay And I Am Not Afraid," expressed the singer on Twitter. He also used Twitter to ask U.S. Congress to take action with gun laws. "The easy access to guns in the United States promotes hate crimes and intolerance. It is time for Congress to act," he stated.
He later continued to show his sympathy on Instagram, where he shared two photos. One showed Robert Mapplethorpe's 1984 photography titled "Two Men Dancing" with a caption that read: "For all those who just wanted to dance (Orlando. June 12, 2016). Another photo, posted Monday morning, spoke for itself, showcasing Martin's NoH8 campaign picture.
The community in Orlando is mourning back-to-back crimes that happened in the Magic City over the weekend. First, it was the passing of former "The Voice" finalist Christina Grimmie, who was shot and killed after one of her concerts by 27-year-old Kevin James, who later shot himself. Then, it was the horrific crime at a local gay nightclub that left 50 dead and 53 wounded during its "Latin Night."
Considered the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, the crime occurred at around 2 a.m. Sunday in Pulse nightclub when a gunman, identified as 29-year-old Mateen, opened fire using an AR-15 rifle.
Investigators are treating the incident as a terrorist attack for its similarities to the ones in Paris last November. “The Orlando nightclub mass shooting was inspired by Islamic State, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday,” officials stated.
Following the tragedy, many people and members of the gay community around the world gathered for vigils to mourn for victims of the mass shooting. These are the victims identified in the shooting, as reported by the City of Orlando. May they rest in peace.
