Promoting “Birdman” did not stop González Iñárritu from kicking off his latest project “The Revenant” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Domnhall Gleeson. The story is no less extreme than the conditions in which they’re filming in Calgary, Canada at extremely low temperatures. The “Birdman” follow-up movie tells the story of fur-trapper Hugh Glass (played by DiCaprio), who is attacked by a grizzly bear and is left for dead before he goes on an epic 200-mile trek back to civilization to encounter the men who had left him there.
As previously mentioned, Iñárritu’s team is working under extreme conditions, in remote locations in Canada, far away from civilizations and the director says he’s become sort of “addicted” to taking risks that could fail. In this case, the filmmakers are only using natural sunlight adding to the technical difficulties of making a film; “It’s a very experimental thing that we’re doing here…I’m now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a surprise.” González Iñárritu reunited with Oscar-Winner Emmanuel Lubezki and his “Birdman” studio, New Regency.
Entertainment Weekly just published photos of the actor on set, so for those wondering the reason behind Leo’s hefty beard, no you know. Iñárritu has nothing but great things to say about the film’s star: “He’s a brave, incredible actor. I’m so surprised about how good he is. I think there’s a profound understanding of humanity that I can see through his eyes.” The movie is set to be released by Twentieth Century Fox on Christmas Day. We can’t wait!
