A Wisconsin senator seemingly blamed Democrats for the tragic plane crash in Washington, DC, before quickly saying that he has no idea "what caused this."

Republican Ron Johnson appeared to back pedal after initially agreeing with an expert cited by Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo, who said that "the last administration tolerated" and "allowed" agencies like air traffic control and the FAA to be "unfit."

"I agree with him and his assessment," Johnson said on Fox News. "I'm not exactly sure what caused this, whether it was purely the air traffic control system, but I know it's completely antiquated. It needs to be upgraded."

The senator went on to say that lawmakers have "known about this for years," but said that "quite honestly, the administrations haven't done anything about it."

As Johnson pitched for new technology to be implemented, he added that "this is exactly, quite honestly, what someone like Elon Musk could get in here with his effort and modernize things."

An American Airlines flight collided mid-air with an Army Black Hawk helicopter Wednesday night, crashing into the Potomac River. All 67 people on board the flights, including U.S. and Russian figure skaters, are believed to have died.

Audio recordings from air traffic control revealed the shocked reactions as they witnessed the collision. At least 27 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage so far.

The crash remains under investigation, and recovery efforts are still ongoing.
