Season 2 of “Reign” premiered last night on the CW, and the royals of France were under immense pressure mainly due to the black plague raging the country and threatening the lives of peasants and nobles alike. With Francis out of the castle to see the birth of his first child with Lola, May was forced to lead the castle’s defenses against the fatal disease, but Lord Edward questioned her power and rule. The castle and the country of France were quarantined from each other with a wall of fire, supposedly used at the time to burn the air clean. While we question the mechanics of this ancient sanitization system, the fire left Mary marooned in the castle with only Catherine to turn to.
Both Lord Edward and Catherine attempted to bend Mary into submission, but her Queen’s determination and will won out. While Catherine demanded to know the whereabouts o her son in the midst of the plague, Mary refused to yield to her intense scrutiny and kept Lola and Francis’ bastard son a secret. In the midst of this chaos, a bastard son born, no husband to aid her, and the black plague spreading, Lord Edward attempted to rule over Mary, despite her position as Queen. The lord, whose family supplies grain and meat to the entire region of France, wanted his wife’s lover thrown into a dungeon with those infected by the plague, a literal death sentence. After effusing to thrown the adulterer in the dungeon, Lord Edward reacted viciously and poisoned a well of water, murdering an entire innocent family, for this he was giving a death sentence, Lord Edward was thrown into the dungeon with the infected plague victims.
And while Mary seemed to outmaneuver her enemies in the premiere episode, the consequences to her decisive actions will be realized in episode 2, “Drawn and Quartered” when Lord Edward’s powerful father arrives at court. The Lord will discover that it was Queen Mary who is responsible for his son’s death and “demands vengeance.” According to the synopsis, this new powerful lord will test the loyalties of Mary, Francis and Catherine. This is not the only drama that will unfold in episode 2, it seems that following the black plague, Nostradamus’ life is now on the line, and it seems that his one ally has turned her back on him.
In the “Drawn and Quartered” promo video, Nostradamus is seen tied by all for of his limbs to horse and looks like he is going to be ripped apart, Mary seems sickened by the act and claims that it is “ a horrific death.” Now that she is the Queen of both France and Scotland, will she intervene and save him? While death is rampant in the castle, Lola and Francis return with new life. The King’s newborn bastard son is now in the castle, therefor his existence will certainly be discovered by Catherine, but also the entire court, most certainly threatening the already tumultuous reign of both Francis and Mary, who are without a legitimate heir. Last but not least, another family member threatening to steal a seat on the ever-alluring throne is Bash, who may be in more danger than ever after his wife, Kenna urges him to “be formally recognized in his new role.”
