Real Madrid introduced their new super team on Tuesday as they beat Sevilla FC 2-0 behind a double by Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Super Cup Final.
James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos made their Real Madrid debuts as the starting XI looked like a who’s who of the best all-star talent the world has to offer.
Real Madrid XI: Iker Casillas, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Contreao, Daniel Carvajal, Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema.
The Real Madrid substitutes are no slouch either as the Los Blancos bench alone could defeat any team in the world on any given day. Highlighting the Madrid bench are goalkeeper Keylor Navas, Raphael Varane, Brazil’s Marcelo, and Argentina’s Angel Di Maria.
Ronaldo scored in the 30th minute to open the game off of a cross from Gareth Bale down the left flank. Ronaldo took the volley past Beto and buried it into the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
Ronaldo continued his domination of Sevilla as he scored his 18th overall goal against them in the second half for his second goal of the game. Karim Benzema sent Ronaldo a great pass that Ronaldo blasted into the net off of his left foot from the left hand side of the box. Beto got a hand on it, but it was not enough to stop Ronaldo.
Sevilla put up a formidable fight against the European super team and had their chances especially in the opening moments, but in the end it was not enough to stop the new “Fantastic Four” up front for Madrid. The foursome which consists of Ronaldo, Bale, Rodriguez and Benzema is the most expensive attacking front line in history. The quartet cost a little more than $400 million to assemble and consists of the reigning FIFA Balloon d’Or winner, the PFA player of the year, the 2012 French player of the year and the FIFA Golden Boot Winner from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The game was played in Bale’s hometown of Cardiff and the Real Madrid friendly crowd cheered loudly every time Bale touched the ball. The win, gave Los Blancos their first trophy of the season and with the way their team is currently assembled, there is reason to believe that Madrid could sweep all six competitions they will compete in this year.
