The biopic is based on the book, "House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder, and Survival," written by Deborah Ball of The Wall Street Journal. The story focuses on the events following the death of Gianni Versace.
The founder of Gianni Versace S.p.a., was murdered in 1997 on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion as he returned from a morning walk on Ocean Drive. Versace had returned after picking up the morning papers when Andrew Cunanan shot and killed the fashion designer. Police admitted that they did not know why Versace was murdered in cold blood, "I don't know that we are ever going to know the answers," said Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Barreto.
Following Gianna's death, Donatella Versace is thrust into the media and world spotlight as the new head designer of the Versace fashion empire. In the midst of this chaos, Donatella became addicted to drugs and nearly bankrupts the fashion company.
The Versace biopic will premiere Oct. 5 on Lifetime and will be followed by a documentary, "Versace: Beyond the Headlines."
