After being hospitalized with a viral heart infection, country music star Randy Travis suffered a stroke, his publicist, Kirt Webster said. He had to undergo surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
The stroke is "a complication of his congestive heart failure," Webster added. The 54-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer had been improving before he had the stroke.
"Mr. Randy Travis is out of surgery and in critical condition," The Heart Hospital at Baylor Plano, Texas, announced on its website Wednesday night.
Physicians William Gray and Michael Mack of the Baylor Health Care System had also released a statement on the singer's condition before he suffered the stroke. Mack said Travis' condition had stabilized "and he has shown signs of improvement."
Meanwhile, the singer's loved ones are asking for people's well-wishes. "We will have updates as they become available," Webster said. "His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support."

The country singer was initially hospitalized Sunday at Baylor Medical Center in McKinney, Texas, "with a presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure," Dr. Gray said. He was transferred to The Heart Hospital at Baylor Plano in Texas on Monday, Dr. Mack added.
"We determined together in a joint decision that a higher level of specialized care was appropriate, and therefore we transferred him to The Heart Hospital," Mack expressed.
Viral cardiomyopathy is a disorder where a virus attacks the muscles of the heart, causing the heart to beat slower and making it harder for the heart to pump blood and carry it to the rest of the body. It can lead to heart failure. Treatments range from medications and surgically implanted devices to heart transplants.
Doctors had indeed implanted a device in Travis' heart to help blood flow. The singer "underwent the placement of an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization prior to transferring hospitals," Kirt Webster said in a written statement Tuesday.
So far the singer is stable but in critical condition following the stroke.
