A group of hotel housekeepers in Dothan, Alabama, are being hailed heroes after they thwarted an attempted kidnapping and sexual assault of a child, authorities said.

The quick action of the employees led to the arrest of 46-year-old Stephen Spencer Ayers, who police said abducted and assaulted the girl inside a hotel room Sunday.

Ayers, a hotel resident, made unwanted sexual advances toward the victim before inappropriately touching her, according to police. When she attempted to leave, Ayers "forcefully" grabbed her from behind and dragged her into his hotel room.

Fortunately, hotel housekeepers witnessed the scene unfold. Reacting immediately, they entered the room, removed the girl from danger, and alerted the authorities.

"Crimes like these will not be tolerated. The Dothan Police Department will hold those who commit these crimes accountable to the fullest extent of the law," said Chief William E. Benny.

Officers responded to the hotel around 1:00 p.m. after receiving the emergency call. Hotel staff informed them about the abduction, and upon arrival, officers attempted to confront Ayers. Instead of complying, he bolted. Police quickly surrounded him and took him into custody, according to authorities.

Ayers is charged with first-degree kidnapping and first-degree sexual abuse. He is currently being held at the Houston County Jail without bond.

Police have not disclosed the name of the hotel where the incident occurred.
