Diana, Princess of Wales, went through a lot of challenges before she died, particularly with the scandal brought about by her issues with Prince Charles. The media was all over her situation, badgering her for interviews and scrounging for any drips of information that she can give. It comes as no surprise that aside from reputable news outlets taking her statements, gossip tabloids also took their share of the limelight, spreading rumors and false narratives just to get sales.

Her tragic passing due to the 1997 Paris car crash did not change that, resulting to some vile stories about her passing, implying some scandalous issues revolving around it. Among the rumors circulating are the allegations that her death was no accident but an assassination and that she was actually pregnant upon her passing.

A discovery a while back seemed to have verified her unusual death, making the rumors a possibility. However, leading forensic pathologist Dr. Richard Shephard — who was appointed to review the evidence of Diana’s case in 2004 — offered some of his insights on the findings of Princess Diana’s tragic accident.

“She was involved in a relatively low-speed impact in a very safe vehicle, and yet she was the one that was injured least in that impact,” said the doctor in an interview.

The crash killed Diana’s lover, Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul, and left Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, in critical condition. The princess, however, seemed to be in good condition right after the accident, having been able to communicate with the first responders.

“But on her journey to hospital she became worse and worse, and actually needed emergency thoracic surgery — and it was all caused by a tiny tear in a vein within her lungs, and that’s a really unusual injury,” added Shephard.

In regard to the tear in her lungs, the doctor admits that the injury was “so rare” that in his career it’s the only one he’s ever seen. He understands that the circumstances are so bizarre that outlandish theories and rumors can be made out of such facts.

“But around that tiny, fatal tear in a pulmonary vein are woven many other facts, some of which are sufficiently opaque to allow a multitude of theories to blossom,” he said.

As for the rumors revolving around her assassination and pregnancy, he denied both. He explained that the medical results he reviewed over and over did not point to any proof that strays away from the current official story surrounding the princess’ death.

“I’ve seen no evidence,” Shephard said. “I’ve seen all of the medical and pathologic information, and I’ve seen absolutely nothing to support that she was pregnant.”
