Most royal family fans only became aware of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marital woes when the book “Diana: Her True Story” came out in 1992. But a documentary revealed that the young royals already had one big fight even before their wedding.
It actually happened days after Prince Charles’ stag party, according to journalist John Edwards in “Charles And Di: The Truth About Their Wedding,” a new Channel 5 royal documentary. The said stag party was held at Whitechapel’s White Gentlemen’s Club six days before their wedding on July 29, 1981.
Edwards learned of the fight because he was there when the princess “whispered” it to fans gathered at a garden party for persons with disabilities days before Diana and Charles’ nuptials. “There was a great humour about, an interest in the people she was talking to,” Edwards narrated. “She stopped right in front of me, we were only a few foot apart, and somebody said to her ‘good luck darling.’”
Princess Diana’s response shocked the journalist. “'Thank you very much’, she said, and then she put her hand over her mouth and she said ‘there was a terrible row last night between Charles and me. It had been his stag party,’” Edwards shared.
However, the princess never elaborated on the details of their row. “What the row was about she didn’t go in,” the journalist explained.
While trouble within Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage was brewing behind the scenes, everyone thought that the newlyweds were living a life of marital bliss. That’s why it shocked everyone when Andrew Morton's book “Diana: Her True Story” came out in 1992. Even Queen Elizabeth was reportedly stunned that Diana would air her “dirty linen in such a way.”
But some insiders revealed that the couple’s woes started way before the book came out. In fact, Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, revealed that their marriage might have started to unravel a mere three years after their wedding and right after Prince Harry was born in 1984.
“I could see the cracks in the marriage between Charles and Diana getting wider and wider, Diana confided in me that on the night Harry was born, she cried herself to sleep,” Burrell said in the Channel 4 documentary “‘Princess Diana’s ‘Wicked’ Stepmother.’”
“She says I knew my marriage was over and the Prince told the Princess that his duty was now done, he had provided the country with an heir and a spare and he could now resume his relationship with Ms Parker Bowles,” Diana’s former butler revealed.
