Prince Harry and Meghan Markle came under fire in June after their renovation expenses for their Frogmore Cottage were exposed. In reality, however, they are not the only royals who have spent millions on their home upgrades. Years ago, Prince William and Kate Middleton also invested in home renovations and spent more than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did.
The Sovereign Grant Report, which includes the royal household’s annual financial statement, reveals how the members of the royal family use for their home upgrades part of Queen Elizabeth’s money provided by taxpayers. This year, the money solely includes the $3 million that Prince Harry and Meghan used to renovate their new home at Windsor Castle.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex renovated the historic home to prepare for the arrival of Baby Archie Harrison. They also renovated the exterior of the property, redecorating its doors, windows and walls; upgrading some of the outbuildings; and relandscaping the garden.
The British taxpayers paid for the interior renovation, but Prince Harry and Meghan paid for the exterior renovation themselves. Despite that, the royal couple still drew flak because majority of the British public thought $3 million was too much for a home renovation.
Actually, Prince William and Kate spent more when they renovated their home in 2014. That year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent more than $5 million to transform the offices in their apartment. The couple spent a chuck of the Sovereign Grant on electrical services, new heating systems, asbestos removal and the redecoration of their home at Kensington Palace.
Although Prince William and Kate also paid for their new kitchen and furnishings, their home renovation cost more than that of Prince Harry and Meghan. But unlike the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, their home renovation did not make headlines.
According to People, the $3 million spent on Prince Harry and Meghan’s home renovation was all part of the $55 million spent by Queen Elizabeth to conserve the royal palaces over the past 12 months. The U.K. government grants the Queen an annual fund of $63 million to maintain the royal palaces on behalf of the entire nation.
