Prince William and Kate Middleton made an unexpected appearance at the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat game Wednesday night, and surprised basketball fans.
Before sitting courtside, the Prince and Princess of Wales were received by Wycliffe “Wyc” Grousbeck, who is the lead owner of the Boston Celtics, reported Page Six. They sat courtside alongside Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, former professional basketball player and Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey, and former Celtics player Tom "Satch" Sanders, among others, reported WCVB.
William and his wife arrived in Boston on Wednesday for a three-day trip. It will end on Friday with the ceremony of The Earthshot Prize, which was designed to find and grow solutions for global warming. Sources said that they were eager to meet fans at the game while they took a break from their hectic schedule.
On the day of the game, they were also flashed on the Jumbotron as fans cheered for them. During the game, there were nods to the arrival of The Earthshot Prize. Last year London hosted the award ceremony. It included the Celtics’ tradition of recognizing a “Hero Among Us” during each game. The hero on Wednesday night was 15-year-old Ollie Perraul, who is a climate activist from Easthampton.
The couple also reportedly met representatives of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation. It provides grassroots programming and strategic funding to local organizations that serve at-risk or at-need people.
William and Kate also shared a photo of the Celtics warming up before the game, and captioned it, "Let's go Celtics, let's go!"
This isn't the royal couple's first time at a National Basketball Association (NBA) game. During their New York City trip in 2014, the two watched the Brooklyn Nets play the Cleveland Cavaliers, reported PEOPLE.
The couple's visit to Boston officially started earlier on Wednesday, when they appeared at Boston City Hall. They were joined by Wu, and there, they started the countdown to the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony by lighting landmarks across the city green. William thanked the "hardy Bostonians" for braving the rainy weather during In a speech outside Boston City Hall. He said that they cannot wait to celebrate the Earthshot Prize finalists later on this week, and the two are "both looking forward to spending the next few days learning about the innovative ways the people of Massachusetts are tackling climate change."
