Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II are not touchy-feely in public. However, the couple once engaged in a rare PDA during their public outing.
A throwback photo of the Duke of Edinburgh kissing Her Majesty on the cheek has just been released via a royal fan’s Instagram account. In the snap, the 92-year-old monarch is wearing an all-blue ensemble. She is on her way to ride the airplane when Prince Philip stopped her in her tracks and kissed her.
The photo was taken in 1982 at a time when the Queen was about to fly back to the United Kingdom while Prince Philip leaves for the United States and Canada. The 97-year-old retired royal is wearing his usual suit and tie.
Her Majesty and Prince Philip are not affectionate toward each other, and there could be a reason why. Kelsie Gibson, a journalist for Pop Sugar, said that Prince Philip and the Queen ought to stay as professional as possible because they are working representatives of the British monarchy.
The publication also compiled a series of photos of the royal couple showing how affectionate they could be every now and then. In one of the snaps, the Queen wraps her hand around her husband’s arm. They have also been photographed holding hands on multiple occasions.
However, Prince Philip and the Queen’s PDA is still nothing compared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s. Last month, the couple was photographed seemingly hugging each other while Prince Harry gave a speech on WE Day. The Duke of Sussex also delighted attendees when he decided to call his wife on stage.
Prince Harry and Meghan also hold hands in public regularly. They did the gesture while in Australia for their first overseas tour as a royal couple. They also held hands during some of their public outings.
And while in Morocco, Meghan was photographed placing her head on Prince Harry’s chest while both of them have huge smiles on their faces. Prince Harry and Meghan’s very public displays of affection are unique to the couple because Prince William and Kate Middleton do not do the same gestures in public.
