The British royal house is on the news with yet another controversy after Prince Harry revealed text messages between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
According to Harry, Kate texted Meghan just days before their wedding, complaining about the outfit Princess Charlotte had to wear.
The Duke of Sussex described the back-and-forth between his wife and his sister-in-law in his new memoir, 'Spare,' which was released on Jan 10. He revealed the fiery texts in an excerpt that was published before the book's official release.
"Meg had a text from Kate. There was a problem with the dresses for the bridesmaids, apparently. They needed altering. The dresses were French couture, hand-sewn from measurements only. So it wasn’t a big shock that they might need altering," Harry wrote in the book. He said his wife and sister-in-law are divided over Princess Charlotte's dress being "not sufficient," Page Six reported.
"Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy," The Princess of Wales texted Meghan about the outfits, which were manufactured using measurements taken prior to a fitting, Harry recalled. "She cried when she tried it on a home."
Meghan, 41, then reportedly told Kate, "Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?"
KP refers to Kensington Palace, their home.
Apparently, the dress was hand-sewn to specific measurements and didn't fit, with Harry explaining that Meghan definitely got rubbed in the wrong direction. Meghan asked Kate if she was aware of the controversy surrounding her father, Thomas Markle, in an effort to help Kate comprehend the stress she was through.
Harry said they communicated via text messages, with Kate insisting that all of the dresses for the wedding had to be remade rather than simply changing Charlotte's dress. Kate reportedly said she consulted her wedding planner about the whole mess!
According to the renegade royal, his wife answered, "I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit then please take Charlotte to see Ajay. He’s been waiting all day." Ajay is their tailor.
"Fine," Kate allegedly replied.
Ultimately, Kate agreed to have Charlotte's dress altered, but the exchange had his wife inconsolable "on the floor" of their home.
Harry wrote in the book. "I was horrified to see her so upset, but I didn’t think it a catastrophe. Emotions were running high, of course, after the stress of the last week, the last month, the last day. It was intolerable—but temporary. Kate hadn’t meant any harm, I told her."
He went on, "Indeed the next morning Kate came by with flowers and a card that said she was sorry. Meg’s best friend, Lindsay, was in the kitchen when she turned up."
Harry summed up the chapter, "Simple misunderstanding, I told myself."
Prince Harry’s Spare is currently the No. 1 in the UK Amazon bestseller charts and among the biggest pre-order titles for high-street retailers.
Google Trends shows that this week saw a more than 200% increase in searches for "Prince Harry Memoir" and "Order Spare," and that the 416-page book climbed to the top of Amazon's bestsellers list days before its scheduled release. The much-discussed book is now officially accessible to purchase on hardcover and as an audiobook (on CD), read by Prince Harry himself.
