In a rather interesting turn of events, it has now been discovered by credible sources that Meghan Markle was in talks with a US-based streaming giant before the Sussexes announced Megxit plans.
As reported by Daily Mail, Harry and Meghan had a meeting with the executives of Quibi at Kensington Palace on Jan. 30, 2019. But, things didn’t really pan out the way the former “Suits” actor intended. The source, on condition of anonymity, also revealed that Katzenberg offered Meghan the opportunity to host a show that combined royalty and pets.
“Meghan seemed to find that idea offensive and though she was gracious at the moment, people in the room were a bit appalled that this was the pitch to her,” said the source, further adding, “'Jeffrey thought that puppies and princesses both sold well so if you put them together you'd have something incredibly commercial'.”
The information contradicts what Harry had revealed in the bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, where he maintained that the couple didn’t really have a plan in particular until the family cut him off financially when they quit as working royals in January 2020.
Katzenberg is one of the leading names in Hollywood, as he headed Disney Studios and founded the DreamWorks studios with Steven Spielberg. He also founded the now-defunct Quibi – a streaming service that broadcast 'short-bite' shows on mobile phones – in August 2018 after having amassed £1.3 billion ($1.39) in funding.
The source however maintained that the first move was initiated by Quibi, which eventually led to a visit at Kensington Palace with Katzenberg. “I believe Quibi first approached Harry and Meghan, who invited executives to meet them in London,” said the source. “There was a discussion about a sustainable travel program and another show about Harry's charity interests in Africa. There was talk about Meghan narrating a nature documentary. Quibi held several discussions with them,” he added.
Katzenberg and his team did not reply to requests for comment. Fast forward to now, the royal couple is living in Montecito, California, and have signed lucrative deals with Spotify and Netflix. They are expecting the arrival of their baby girl in summer.
