Everything is set to change in Season 5 of “Pretty Little Liars,” mainly due to the return of Alison DiLaurentis. So obviously all the residents of Rosewood should prepare for the blonde tyrant to return to her throne, but one resident in particular has had enough of Alison’s oppressive rule. Paige McCullers, the current ex-girlfriend of Emily and one of my top “A” suspects, will not be welcoming Ali back to Rosewood High with open arms.
Instead, Paige and Alison notably hate each other, and while we are not yet sure what sparked Ali’s torment it’s understood that Paige has some serious resentment towards Ali after being called “Pigskin” for most of her formative years. Paige seemingly got her revenge on Ali, under the rouse of keeping Emily safe, by tipping off the Rosewood PD that Alison is in fact alive. But according to “Pretty Little Liars” show runner Marlene King, the feud between Alison and Paige is just getting started.
King, the spoiler queen herself, tweeted a somewhat teasing message to fans saying: the first “Paige/Alison face off” is being filmed right now. Based on the date of filming and the progress the cast and crew has made on Season 5, the scene is most likely set to premiere in the highly anticipated 100th episode. The milestone episode, which is set to occur in episode 5 of Season 5, will welcome back many former characters and refuel former conflicts. The episode is already rumored to be one of the biggest of the series so far, so the growing confrontation between Paige and Ali is really just icing on the 100th episode cake.
It’s safe to assume that in addition to past resentment, the forthcoming face-off will revolve around Emily, Alison’s long lost best friend and Paige’s once very serious girlfriend. Paige and Emily have been in a serious relationship for most of the series. However, Emily coldly ended it after learning of Paige’s betrayal, which jeopardized Ali’s safety.
Season 5 will be decision-making time for Emily. Like the complicated relationship Emily has with Paige, her relationship with Alison is even more twisted. Emily had a crush on Alison before she disappeared, but fans don’t know if the feelings are reciprocated. The friends did share a kiss once in the library, but Alison belittled it claiming it was “practice for the real thing,” devastating an already conflicted Emily.
This wasn’t the only kiss. When “A” drugged Emily, she thought she imagined Alison kissing her to wake her up. But in the Season 4 finale “A is for Answers,” Ali revealed that she was actually there. Season 5 will determine who she picks between Ali and Paige. It seems unlikely that both can exist in her life, so fans will just have to wait and see who Emily picks.
Season 5 of “Pretty Little Liars” premieres on ABC Family on June 10 at 8 p.m. with the premiere episode “EscApe From New York.”
