Each year, the Dominican Republic celebrates its artists with an award called Premios Soberano , the biggest recognition that honors the best of local music, TV, radio, theater, classical arts and movies. Hosted by Pamela Sued and Francisco Vásquez , this year the show will have the honor of witnessing the king of Dominican music, Juan Luis Guerra, perform and people are already getting excited about it. The biggest event in Dominican arts will take place this year at the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito at 7:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 28.
Besides Guerra, other artists confirmed to perform are reggaeton superstar Wisin, Pochy Familia, Kinito Mendez, Bobby Rafael, Henry García, Cuco Valoy and his son, Ramón Orlando, the queen of Merengue, Milly Quezada, and Vicente García, among others.
Meanwhile, Nuestra Belleza Latina 2015 beauty queen and “Despierta América” co-host Francisca Lachapel, along with Dominican personalities Raeldo López, Caroline Aquino and fashion expert Francisco Sanchís, will host the red carpet, with up-and-comer TV host Carlos Durán in charge of monitoring Social Media during the 2-hour display of Dominican and international glitz and glamour.
Besides the nominations (which you can see here) in four major categories that are “Popular,” “Media and Communications,” “Cinema” and “Classics,” the show also features four special awards: “Soberano Internacional,” “Soberano al Mérito” and “Soberano Especial,” and “Soberano del Público,” in which the audience chooses their ultimate favorite entertainer of the year.
The “Soberano Internacional” will go to Puerto Rican performer Wisin for his achievements throughout his career in the music industry. As a solo artist during the past three years, he’s positioned six singles as #1 in the Billboard Latin Airplay chart. His most recent album, “Los Vaqueros: La Trilogía,” debuted as the best-selling Latin album in the United States and Puerto Rico for two consecutive weeks. His album “El Sobreviviente,” won twice at the 2015 Latin Billboard Awards, adding more awards to his list, which includes a Grammy and a Latin Grammy.
Wisin has collaborated with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee, Michel Teló, Farruko, among others, with whom he’s recorded chart-topping singles. In 2016, he produced the first album of Univision’s “La Banda” winners, CNCO, creating a successful production that debuted #1 with the most successful sales for a Latin album in the whole year.
The “Soberano al Mérito” will be awarded to Dominican folklore icons, professor Josefina Miniño and her husband, Papa Molina, renowned musician and orchestra director. Dominican singer Leonardo Paniagua, bachata pioneer, will also be recognized with this award. And last, but not least, the “Soberano Especial” will be awarded to journalist, publicist and writer Freddy Ginebra, founder of Casa de Teatro, an institution that has promoted and supported the Dominican arts since its beginnings and has provided a platform for them to showcase their talents.
Premios Soberano is expected to be a huge party like only Dominicans know how to throw, and will be broadcasted live by Telemicro, Channel 5 in the Dominican Republic.
