The 2013-2014 has certainly been kind to international soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo thus far. Claiming his second Ballon d’Or Award early this year while helping Portugal advance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the world-class scorer continues to solidify himself as one of the top professional footballers on the planet. If that’s not enough, CR7 is also one of the main reasons Spanish Primera Division giants Real Madrid currently lead the league over perennial powers Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Hoping to guide his native Portugal to a World Cup title, the 28-year-old will now participate in an upcoming international friendly against Cameroon, a team also looking to make a run at the upcoming summer tournament.

Portugal will play out of a competitive Group G when the Brazil games open on June 12. Randomly selected along with the United States, Ghana and 2002 World Cup runner-up Germany, Ronaldo and the Portuguese Nationals will certainly use each match ahead of the summer games as a way to improve and analyze the overall level of talent on the roster. Two players expected to receive loads of internal attention include attacker Rafa and 20-year-old forward Ivan Cavaliero, talents recently named to the Portugal roster by head coach Paulo Bento.

“We have tracked their progress at their clubs and in the Portugal youth levels and we decided this was the right time to call them up,” the 44-year-old boss said regarding the aforementioned players. “Rafa can play on the flanks and also as a number 10, which gives us several solutions. Ivan has played a lot for Benfica B. The fact he can play on either flank or as a centre-forward gives the squad more solutions. The fact certain players are in this squad does not mean they will be in the World Cup squad. Likewise, the fact certain players have not been called up on this occasion does not mean that they cannot be selected on 19 May.”

While Portugal hopes the additions of Rafa and Cavaliero benefit them during Wednesday’s friendly, Cameroon -- who will play alongside Brazil, Croatia and Mexico in Group A of the World Cup -- are optimistic that the recalling of centre-forward Mohamadou Idrissou helps their side in the match. The 33-year-old last played for Cameroon on October 13 against Tunisia.
