Not too long ago, no one could imagine Porsche to ever introduce a model offering a diesel powerplant. However, now that Porsche has unleashed its latest Cayenne S Diesel, even Porsche purists will learn to appreciate the new oil burner.

The new Porsche Cayenne S Diesel will introduce the most powerful diesel powerplant from Porsche ever -- a direct injection turbocharged 4.2 liter V8 engine, rated at 382-hp and an astounding 627 lb.-ft. of torque. Enough torque to bring down a house, the Cayenne S Diesel is capable of accelerating from 0-to-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and reach 157 mph.

A gentle brute, Porsche also boasts that the new Cayenne S Diesel offers stop/start technology for improved fuel efficiency, the only diesel SUV to offer such a feature. European cycle fuel economy rates the Cayenne S Diesel at 8.3 liters per 100 km.

Unfortunately, following reports from Land Rover that the Range Rover Diesel Hybrid will not be released in the U.S. market, Porsche officials confirm that the Stuttgart automaker's diesel performance SUV follows suit. In a lame attempt to fill the void, Porsche has released a new promo video for the U.S. Market base Porsche Cayenne Diesel, which only offers a 3.0 liter V6 powerplant producing 240-hp and 406 lb.-ft. of torque.

From hybrid drivetrains to small displacement turbocharged engines, automakers are searching for more fuel efficient powerplants that promise not to sacrifice fuel economy. Given the superior torque figures from a diesel engine, expect automakers to start offering even more diesel offerings in even more markets, including the United States, in the near future.
