A Brighton teen who shot his father to death at their home on Monday, June 21, has been charged for the murder.

Hayden Jagst was arraigned on Wednesday for the murder of his father, Edward Jagst, who was a Canton Township police officer.

The 48-year-old was found dead Monday morning inside his Woodlake Drive home. Brighton Police officers responded to the residence after receiving a 911 call from Edward’s teen daughter.

The girl told officers that her 18-year-old brother had shot and killed their father. She said he threatened to kill himself before leaving the home.

"We were able to get the suspect on the phone and after some negotiations, he drove back to Brighton and turned himself in without incident. We are still processing the scene and working on motives," Brighton Police Chief Rob Bradford said.

He was taken into custody after officers brought his vehicle to a stop.

"I was going to back out and then all of a sudden there are at least five or six police cars surrounding a blue vehicle. They got their guns out, they pointed them at the suspect, and at that point, I wanted to get out of there. My kids wanted to watch and see what was going on, but I didn’t know if he would take off running so I was trying to go around to the back. But they surrounded the car and they really had it under control. Then he got in the police car and it all happened in just a matter of minutes," a Howell mother, who witnessed the arrest, told WHMI FM.

Hayden is currently on probation for a previous conviction of possession of burglary tools, according to court documents.

Hayden was arraigned Wednesday afternoon via video before Magistrate Jerry Sherwood in 53rd District Court. He is facing charges of open murder, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, felony firearms, and carrying a concealed weapon.

He acknowledged that he understood the charges.

"Yes I do sir, thank you," Hayden told the magistrate.

The motive behind the slaying is unclear at this time as the suspect hasn't made any statements. Hayden is currently being held at the Livingston County Jail.
