The Culver City Police is now under investigation in connection with the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man last Aug.3 at the roof of a six-story parking lot in California. Body camera videos have emerged although there were parts notably edited by the department.
Jesse Van Loozen was killed in the confrontation when he came out of the stairwell and onto the roof. An officer could be heard yelling that the 34-year-old had a knife after which the officers opened fire, NBC News reported.
Van Loozen was brought to the hospital but died. From the shared videos, there were blurred portions by the police. Hence, it is a bit unclear what went down on that day. A video of the whole incident can be viewed here.
The 34-year-old was not the only one who ended up injured. There was an officer who got wounded from the crossfire but is now recovering at home.
On Aug. 3, a 911 call was made reporting that there was a man with a knife in the stairwell. Van Loozen had locked himself in the stairwell and busted open a pipe, proof of which was the water seen all over the garage top’s floor.
"Hey just come out, all we want to do is talk," an officer said in the video. "We want to help you. We're not here to hurt you."
The investigation is still ongoing with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, the sheriff's department, the coroner's office and the Culver City Police Department's professional standards unit all collaborating on the shooting incident.
“This video is being released prior to the conclusion of the criminal and administrative investigations to share this information with our community,” Culver City Police Chief Manny Cid said.
