Here are all the 2023 Golden Globe nominees who are representing for the Latino community.
Diego Luna
Mexican Actor Diego Luna has been nominated for his part in the adventure “Star Wars” series “Andor.” Luna leads the sci-fi series as Cassian Andor, a thief who then becomes a rebel spy and revolutionary working to combat the Galactic Empire by joining the Rebellion. This is Luna’s first Golden Globe nomination for the “Narcos: Mexico” actor. He will be competing for Best Performance By an Actor in a Television Drama Series against Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Adam Scott and Bob Odenkirk.
Jenna Ortega
Actress Jenna Ortega has splashed onto the Hollywood scene with her rendition of the Wednesday Adams in the Netflix series “Wednesday” and it has earned her attention from the Golden Globes. The first-time nominee, who is of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent, has been in other projects such as the MTV show “Scream” and the Disney show “Stuck in the Middle” but following the release of the anticipated show, she gained 10 million followers on Instagram in 10 days. Ortega is up for Best Performance By an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The 20-year-ood actress is up against Quinta Brunson, Kaley Cuoco, Selena Gomez and Jean Smart. The series itself is also nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
Guillmero del Toro
Guillmero del Toro’s “Pinocchio” is up for Best Animated Motion Picture. The Netflix fantasy incorporates del Toro’s highly imaginative style with a new twist to the classic fairy tale. The Mexican filmmaker is no stranger to the Golden Globes as this is del Toro’s fourth nomination. He was nominated for Best Foreign Language Motion Picture for “Pan’s Labyrinth” in 2007. In 2018 his romantic fantasy “The Shape of Water” won him Best Director and earned him a nomination for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture Screenplay. The seasoned director is going against Dean Fleischer-Camp’s mocumentary “Marcel The Shell With Shoes On,” Joel Crawford’s “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” and Domee Shi’s “Turning Red.”
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is making her award rounds having just come from winning big at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Again, her role as Mabel Mora in popular comedy mystery series “Only Murder in the Building” has earned her a nomination for Best Performance By an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy alongside Ortega. This is Gomez’s first Golden Globes nomination. Both of Gomez’s co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin as well as the show itself are also being recognized as nominees.
Ana de Armas
We’ve seen her as an A.I. in “Blade runner 2049” and we saw her as the underdog-turned strong protagonist in “Knives Out.” Now after taking on the difficult task of playing the iconic Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”, Cuban-Spanish Actress Ana de Armas has earned a Golden Globe nomination. De Armas plays Monroe, whose real name is Norma Jean, showing the movie star’s struggles in her rise to fame and eventual demise. The 34-year-old actress is nominated for Best Performance By an Actress in a Drama Motion Picture and is in the company of Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, Olivia Colman and Cate Blanchett.
Diego Calva
Mexican Actor Diego Calva is a fairly new face for American audiences. Having acted in several films and winning international awards, the 30-year-old is now being recognized for his work in “Babylon.” He leads the film alongside powerhouse Actors Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as Manny Torres, a young film assistant looking to make in impact in 1920s Hollywood. The Mexico City native was actually picked specifically for the role by the film’s director, Damien Chazelle. This is Calva’s first major English-language role, and it has earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy. Along with Calva, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes are also nominated.
Anya Taylor-Joy
“The Menu” is an off-kilter, eerie black comedy that pokes fun at pretentious foodies and the extremely wealthy. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as protagonist Margot Mills, a guest and escort who attends a fine-dining experience that turns on its side and she is the first to notice something is off about the celebrity chef running it. Taylor-Joy, who identifies as Latina and is of Argentinian descent, is nominated for Best Performance By an Acctress in a Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy. She is nominated along with Margot Robbie, Lesley Manville, Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh.
Argentina, 1985 (Argentina)
More Argentinian representation was seen in the category for Best Foreign language film. “Argentina, 1985” is a historical drama that follows an inexperienced yet courageous team of lawyers who take on the challenge of prosecuting the ringleaders of Argentina’s military dictatorship. This movie mirrors the real-life events of the 1985 Trial of the Juntas.
