On Tuesday night, the 2022 People’s Choice Awards hosted a plethora of celebrities, artists and influencers who flocked to Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California for the event.
The 48th annual awards hosted by “SNL” Star Kenan Thompson for the second time in a row saw good performances, memorable moments and Latin representation.
Here are all the Latinos who held it down for the evening.
Xochitl Gomez
Budding movie star Xochitl Gomez may not have won individually but the movie she co-stars in with Benedict Cumberbatch, won the top movie category, Movie of 2022. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is a fast-pace, reality bending superhero film that sees Gomez hold her own as a universe jumping teen badass. Her personality and will to go toe to toe against the terrifying Scarlett Witch who was on an emotional rampage was truly admirable.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez may not have won an award but her movie “Marry Me” got her a few mentions. The actress was nominated for The Female Movie Star of 2022 and The Comedy Movie Star of 2022 thanks to the film. The movie itself was also nominee for The Comedy Movie of the 2022. The romance comedy stars Lopez with Owen Wilson as her love interest. Mirroring her real life, Lopez plays a pop superstar named Kat Valdez. She ends up marrying a stranger in the crowd after finding out her fiancé has been cheating.
Selena Gomez
“Only Murders in the Building” Actress Selena Gomez had a great night at the awards being nominated individually for two awards and winning three. The popular Hulu show staring Gomez along with Actors Martin Short and Steve Martin was nominated for The Comedy Show of 2022, but Gomez was able to secure The Comedy TV Star of 2022 and earn her a nomination for The Female TV Star of 2022. The “Selfish Love” singer also got a nod for her collaboration with Coldplay in The Music Video of 2022 for their visual "Let Somebody Go.” She also won The Social Star of 2022, which recognizes people a strong social media impact. The social media influencer has over 361 million followers, the third highest amount followed behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylie Jenner.
Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny has been on a great awards run, dominating the Latin Grammys, making Grammys history and having Apple’s most streamed album of 2022. For the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, he did not win, but he did have the highest number of nominations for the night at seven. The Puerto Rican rapper was nominated for The Male Artist of 2022, The Latin Artist of 2022, The Concert Tour of 2022 and The Social Celebrity of 2022 with a whopping 44.2 million followers on Instagram. His collaborative song "Me Porto Bonito," with Chencho Corleone earned him a nomination for The Song of 2022. “Un Verano Sin Ti” was nominated for album of the year and his collaboration with Rauw Alejandro on “Party” earned him a nomination for The Collaboration Song of 2022.
Honorable mentions
Guatemalan American Actor Oscar Isaac earned a nomination for kicking butt and taking names in the Marvel series “Moon Knight.” He was nominated for The Male TV Star of 2022 for his role as lead and the show overall was nominated for The Sci-fi/Fantasy Show of 2022. Dua Lipa also got some love being nominated for The Concert Tour of 2022 with her Future Nostalgia Tour. She was also nominated along with Megan Thee Stallion for their visually stunning "Sweetest Pie” collaboration.
Cuban American Singer Camila Cabello was nominated for The Female Artist of 2022 and “The Adam Project” staring Zoe Saldana as the main love interest was took home The Comedy Movie of 2022 award. In The Social Star of 2022 category, Former Vine Star Brent Rivera and Make-up Artist Mikayla Jane Nogueira were nominated. Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal was also nominated for The Game Changer of 2022. Last but not least, The Latin Artist of 2022 category saw nine potential winner including Bad Bunny but “Esquemas” Singer Becky G took home the award.
