Playboy magazine has announced that as of next year, it will be a non-nude publication. For the first time in the brand's history, models, celebrities and Playmates will not be featured naked on the magazine. Though it might sound like a true bummer for some, Playboy and its founder Hugh Hefner are ecstatic and feel positive with their new redesign concept, simply because according to them, "times change."
The first issue of the company's new initiative will kick off on February when they launch the March 2016 issue. The idea to not include nudity in their publication occurred after Playboy relaunched a "safe-for-work" website. To their surprise, traffic on Playboy.com increased from 4 million to 16 million users a month. Tens of millions of readers also visited the revamped non-nude app. Both Internet platforms include photos of sexy women, artists, videos and games.
"We are, and always have been, 'entertainment for men' – with award-winning journalism and fiction to boot. Playboy is a cultural arbiter of beauty, taste, opinion, humor and style," notes the website, who admits they are taking a risk with the redesign. "It was built around a magazine virtually no one thought would succeed, yet now it’s impossible (for us, anyways) to picture a world without Playboy. Our journalism, art, photos and fiction have challenged norms, defied expectations and set a new tone for decades."
The first-ever issue of Playboy launched 62 years ago in 1952 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover, selling for 50 cents a copy. NPR reports that according to Cory Jones, an editor at the magazine, "Playboy will still feature racy photos, including a 'Playmate of the Month,' but that these images will be of a PG-13 variety."
