The final major tournament of the 2013 PGA Tour season is underway and of the 156 players in the field at the PGA Championship, most of the attention is on the No. 1 ranked player in the world.

As he stepped up to the tenth tee -- players teed off on split tee's Thursday -- Tiger Woods was well aware of the fact that he hasn't won a major championship since claiming the 2008 U.S. Open Championship in a playoff over Rocco Mediate.

Playing in a field that includes 2013 Major champions Adam Scott (Masters), Justin Rose (U.S. Open) and Phil Mickelson (The Open Championship) along with World No. 3 Rory McIlroy and talented players such as Hunter Mahan, Graeme McDowell and Dustin Johnson, the task for Woods to win Major title No. 15 is surely a difficult one.

Alongside Davis Love III and Keegan Bradley - past champions at the PGA Championship - Woods began his Thursday round with three-straight pars before birdying the par 4 13th to move to minus-one.

With a par at the 14th hole followed by another birdie at 15, Woods was out to a comfortable two-under start through 6 holes. Finishing up his first 9 with three-straight pars, the 37-year-old made the turn at -2, 2 shots behind leader David Hearn.

Reeling off pars at holes 1, 2 and 3, Tiger made his first bogey of the day at the Par 5 4th, a disappointing score considering Oak Hill Country Club's East Course only contains 2 par 5's in the layout of the Par 70 course.

Though the early start looked promising, a double bogey at the final hole dropped Woods to plus-one heading into Friday.

PGA Championship Early Leaderboard

Former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk had the best Thursday morning round, pouring in an opening round 65 to take the early tournament lead. Furyk played well at the recent Open Championship and after firing a round of five-under, Furyk has certainly positioned himself moving forward.

Canadian David Hearn finished his opening round with a four-under 66. Staying atop the leaderboard throughout the first round, Hearn recorded 6 birdies and 2 bogeys, a fantastic start to a tournament that's expected to increase in course difficulty as the days move on.

Robert Garrigus, Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar, Marcus Fraser and Henrik Stenson finished their rounds at -3, placing themselves in contention heading into Friday's second round.

Sergio Garcia recorded a solid one-under 69 on day one with Charley Hoffman and Billy Horschel throwing up matching 69's as well.
