The 95th PGA Championship began Thursday at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York and with many of the worlds best included in the field of 156 players, 2 golfers stole the show in the opening round.

2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk put together a strong first round, firing a five-under 65 to begin his quest for a second major championship.

Thanks to 6 birdies and only 1 bogey, the 43-year-old native of West Chester, Pennsylvania was able to stay ahead of the field and owned sole possession of the first round once the morning golfers completed their rounds.

Furyk would instantaneously be joined atop the leaderboard thanks to another strong major performance from 2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott.

Scott matched Furyk's birdie total with his only bogey coming at the par 4 16th en route to an identical 65.

Scott catapulted himself up the leaderboard thanks to five-consecutive birdies from holes 4 through 8 and when it was all said and done, the Australian owned a share of the lead at the year's final major.

Notable Scores

14-time major champion Tiger Woods posted an opening round 71 and although he finds himself 6 shots behind the leaders after double-bogeying the final hole, Woods was happy with his overall play on Thursday and he's confident moving forward.

"The round realistically could have been under par easily," Woods said to reporters following his round. "I played really well today. One loose 9-iron shot. I made a few par putts out there as well.

"As I say, I feel like I played well enough and made some nice key putts, and the key is I left it in good spots too," he continued. "I'm still right there. I mean, as of right now, I'm only six back and we have a long way to go."

While Woods enjoyed early success and struggled on his final hole of the day, 2013 Open Champion Phil Mickelson had to endure difficulties of his own.

Lefty did convert 4 birdies but thanks to double bogeys at the par 5 fourth and another at the last, Mickelson posted a round of plus-one as well.

Phil Mickelson tees off at 8:35am, ET on Friday while Tiger Woods takes to Oak Hill at 1:45pm, ET.
