A pet owner who was searching for her lost dog in the woods reportedly recently ended up finding the skeletal remains of a woman missing since 2017 in Youngstown, Ohio.
The unnamed woman was reportedly looking for her dog in a wooded area along Thorn Hill Road on the East Side of Youngstown, Ohio, about 10 miles west of the Pennsylvania line, on Aug. 26, when she made the gruesome discovery.
While she was searching for her dog, she stumbled upon the skeletal remains of a person. The woman reportedly proceeded to take the remains home, called authorities, and informed them about the grisly find, NBC News reported.
The authorities later transported the bones to the coroner's office and launched an investigation into the incident. Using dental records, the jawbone and teeth obtained from the recovered skull confirmed that the remains belonged to a woman named Amy Nicole Hambrick, who vanished from Youngstown’s West Side in November 2017 at the age of 29.
According to Police Capt. Jason Simon, Hambrick was last known to be meeting up at a friend’s house in North Jackson. However, she never made it to her friend's place, the New York Post reported.
According to Hambrick's mother Debby Dolin, Hambrick was a heroin addict and had started using the drug again during the time of her disappearance. Hambrick's daughter, Jayden, was just 10 years old when she disappeared.
Even though Hambrick's remains have been found, the time and circumstances of her death and how she ended up in the woods remain a mystery.
“Every investigative avenue was utilized over the last five years, including countless interviews, searches of residences, the use of cadaver dogs, and the serving of legal process on digital and cellular records,” Simon said.
Simon asked for the public's help to provide the officers with information about her last whereabouts. Simon added that the cause of her death will be listed as undetermined given the condition of her remains.
“At least one person knows what happened to her,” he said. “We’re asking to speak to either that individual, because clearly there’s a side of the story here, or anyone that has information about her discovery.”
Simon added that the investigation into the incident continues and that detectives will be reinterviewing people as more testing will be done on the remains.
