A man out on bail has been accused of breaking into his former girlfriend's home before proceeding to dump the ashes of her deceased child into the trash in South Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Joseph Oberlies, 33, who was reportedly out on bond for an earlier arrest on Aug. 5 after being charged with first-degree assault and battery, allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's residence on Saturday, Sept. 3. While trespassing into her home, he allegedly destroyed her flat-screen TV and also dumped the ashes of his ex-girlfriend's child into the garbage, Fox News reported.
Footage obtained from a doorbell camera shows Oberlies approaching his ex-girlfriend's house at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. He can then be seen entering the security code and entering the residence. He was subsequently recorded leaving the house minutes later. However, he returned shortly after 4 a.m. and did not leave the residence until 7:52 a.m.
The female victim reportedly dated Oberlies for several months earlier in 2022. However, he had been placed on trespass notice after threatening several times to break into the woman’s home. The victim alleged that after breaking in, Oberlies used a hammer to destroy her flat-screen TV and then threw an urn that contained the ashes of the child she had with her ex-husband into the trash, MSN reported.
The victim noted that Oberlies could not have known that she and her children would not be at home when he broke in and that it made her frightened to think of what he would have done if they had been.
When the incident happened, Oberlies had been out on bond for an earlier arrest on Aug. 5. after being arrested for allegedly breaking into the house of one of his exes and stabbing her.
Oberlies initially claimed to the officers that he was not in the area when the break-in occurred. However, he later told the police officers that he was "black-out drunk" during the time and was unable to remember the incident.
Oberlies has been booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Thursday, Sept. 8. and charged with first-degree burglary and destruction of human remains. He was later released on a US$60,000 bond that evening.
