Jencarlos Canela is balancing his music and acting career, and though it might seem challenging, the actor and singer is a pro! Not only is he working on an upcoming album and starring alongside Eva Longoria in NBC's "Telenovela," but he's also the leading role in FOX's upcoming live musical, "The Passion," where he will portray Jesus Christ.
"It's a huge role. FOX took the risk and said, 'here you go, a latino playing Jesus Christ,'" he told Latin Times. "But it's more that that. It's a role that goes beyond any skin color, any culture. It's a story that unifies and we need that message now, more than ever," he stated.
The biblical live musical, hosted and narrated by Tyler Perry, will have a modern twist, according to the Cuban-American artist. "The story is told in modern time, with modern elements. No beard, no robes, no camels. It's 2016. Biblically, they are respecting the story," he said, adding that even the music will be modern with some small adaptations. "It's completely live from New Orleans, one of the best cities in the world. It's going to be crazy," he added.
"The Passion," which also stars Prince Royce and Trisha Yearwood, will premiere live at 8p.m. ET on Palm Sunday, March 20 via FOX Network. Check out the complete interview with Canela, above.
