Jencarlos Canela is having a great year in television. The actor stars in the NBC comedy "Telenovela" opposite Eva Longoria and now he has landed a the lead role in the upcoming FOX musical "The Passion." The Biblical live show has cast Canela as Jesus Christ and will join previously announced Prince Royce in the role of disciple Peter. It was also announced that Chris Daughtry will take on the part of Judas, joining host and narrator Tyler Perry and Trisha Yearwood as the mother of Jesus, Mary. The FOX network will air the event live from New Orleans on Palm Sunday, March 20.
The live musical is written by Peter Barsocchini and it's the story of the last hours of Jesus Christ. It will be set in modern times and we'll see Jesus as he presides over the Last Supper, followed by the betrayal of Judas, put on trial, convicted, crucified and resurrected. Music producer Adam Anders is behind the song that will mix originals and popular music. "The Passion" will be staged around New Orleans locations with the procession of hundreds of people set to carry a 20-foot illuminated cross from outside the Superdome to the stage at Woldenburg Park.
