Eight-time division champion Manny Pacquiao formally announced his retirement from boxing, something that was expected to be made in October.
Pacquiao put up a video on his social media account, something that immediately went viral.
In the video which has already garnered 289,000 views and 23,000 shares, Pacquiao looked back at his journey and thanked everyone who helped him succeed in the sport.
“Boxing has always been my passion. I was given the opportunity of representing the Philippines, bringing fame and honor to my country every time I enter the ring. I am grateful for all the accomplishments and the opportunity to inspire,” Pacquiao said.
The Pacquiao retirement comes not long after the 42-year-old lost via unanimous decision to Cuban pug Yordenis Ugas. With the 2022 Philippine elections happening in May, some speculated that a rematch would happen before the polls are held.
But speaking to a reliable source close to Pacquiao, the idea of seeing the PacMan train and campaign was ridiculous. The boxer-senator will focus on his presidential bid and nothing else.
Despite being well-loved in the Philippines, there is the possibility that Pacquiao may lose in the presidential race. Could this spur a boxing return?
The same source that it is unlikely. Should Pacquiao lose, the future boxing Hall of Famer plans to go back to his home province and enjoy his retirement.
“Goodbye boxing, thank you for changing my life when my family was desperate. You gave us hope. You gave us the chance to fight out of poverty. Because of you, I was able to inspire people all over the world. Because of you, I have been given the courage to change more lives,” Pacquiao said in the end.
Pacquiao will turn 43 in December and he did admit that his age is showing. Some remain skeptical, others believing he will change his mind.
But for now, that is the latest word on Pacquiao, who puts an end to his famed boxing career.
