Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey were already friends even before the former actress married Prince Charles and became a member of the British royal family. But friendship aside, there’s something that the talk show host is extremely proud of when it comes to her pal — her decision to take a stand on matters concerning her baby and her family even if it goes against some royal protocols.
Winfrey expressed her full support for Meghan even with her tradition-busting moves. “Oh my God! I'm so proud of her decisions,” Winfrey told ET Online’s Nischelle Turner at The Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment in Entertainment Gala.
“To be able to stand up and say this is what I really want for my baby and my family and now I'm going to do it a different way when it's been done that way for a thousand years? I'm just so proud of her,” she added.
To say that Meghan is under a lot of pressure these days is an understatement. Just as the Duchess of Sussex is about to give birth to her first son with Prince Harry, she has been criticized for some decisions that go against royal birth traditions.
One such move is Meghan’s decision not to do a post-delivery photo shoot a few days after delivery. “Who is ready to walk out and stand before the world and put that face on, you know, a day after you've had a baby?” Winfrey complained of the unreasonable royal birth custom. “So I think for her and him — I'm sure it was a mutual decision for the two of them — I think it's a great thing.”
As far as Winfrey is concerned, it all boils down to what Meghan really wants. “And truthfully, it ain't nobody else's business!” the talk show host exclaimed. “That's really the truth.”
Meanwhile, Oprah and Meghan’s royal hubby, Prince Harry, are collaborating for a mental health series scheduled for launch in 2020. And what surprised Winfrey is the royal’s very hands-on approach to their work.
“We're excited to be exploring it together,” Winfrey told E!News. “He's a true partner.” By true partner the talk show host meant that Harry really put his own efforts into the project, answering emails, constantly communicating and being a big part in the brainstorming process.
“He weighs in,” Winfrey shared. “He always has something to say about everything.”
