A British nursing home staff has been sentenced to life in prison after he was reportedly caught on camera assaulting a 99-year-old woman with dementia.
Phillip Carey, 48, who works as a care worker at a nursing home in Blackpool, Lancashire, was caught sexually assaulting a 99-year-old grandmother suffering from dementia on a secret camera that her family had installed in her room after they became concerned for her welfare, BBC reported.
“We were concerned maybe someone was being unkind or too rough with her so we decided to install a hidden camera in her room so we could see what was happening,” the family said.
“We were shocked and horrified, never imagining we would see her being abused and raped in her own room,” they added.
According to the victim's family members, the victim was not allowing them to even touch or hug her and begged her relatives when they visited saying, “Don’t leave me, they will hurt me.”
The victim's family members then decided to install a covert camera in the victim's room to try to discover what was causing her so much distress. However, after installing the hidden camera, they witnessed Carey entering the elderly woman's room, raping her, and sexually assaulting her on the live feed, the Independent reported.
Following the gruesome discovery, the family members immediately alerted the police officers about the assault, and Carey was arrested. After his arrest, when prosecutors presented forensic evidence and the camera footage of the assault, Carey pleaded guilty before the Preston Crown Court and was sentenced to life with a minimum of 10 years.
The victim's family said it had been "very distressing" for all the family members to come to terms with what happened" at the Blackpool care home.
"Our elderly relative has gone through a horrific ordeal at the hands of someone we trusted to care for her," they said.
The victim's family praised police officers for their support throughout the case. They also advised other people with elderly loved ones in care to "listen to what they are saying and be aware of behavior changes".
"If you think there could be something happening to them do something about it," they added.
Meanwhile, Senior prosecutor Sophie Rozdolskyj, said that Carey abused his position of trust and targeted a vulnerable woman whom he should have been caring for.
“I am grateful to the victim’s family who has shown great strength throughout the Court proceedings. I hope today’s sentence provides them with some comfort, knowing Carey has been brought to justice for his actions,” he added.
