"Nuestra Belleza Latina" has caused quite a lot of controversy of late: Many are questioning Aleyda Ortiz's win and suggesting Josephine Ochoa was the deserved winner. One of our readers reached out to us with an open letter to Univision demanding they show proof of the results: "It is important to show everyone that voted how Univision and Nuestra Belleza Latina determined the winner with written proof for each Candidate." Univision has responded to the claims and explained the voting process.
Univision explains that first and foremost, it was not actualy Univision itself tallying the votes, but rather an independent company called Telescope Inc. which ensures impartiality." As the vote certification partner of "Nuestra Belleza Latina," Telescope Inc. certifies that the results based on the audience votes cast within the valid voting window are accurate. Telescope rigorously analyzed all of the voting data as per the conditions and voting rules for ‘Nuestra Belleza Latina.’"
Moreover, Telescope explains that the voting process allows ten votes per platform per user, which determines the outcome. Only taking into account Twitter or Facebook votes does not give an accurate picture. "[Univision] rules impose a limit of ten votes per Twitter account, which third-party social analytics services do not account for. We can confirm that a fair vote occurred and the result is correct. Aleyda Ortiz is the winner of this season's competition, with indisputable victories across all four of the voting methods (toll-free, AT&T SMS, Online, and Twitter).”
Univision rules clearly state that you can only vote ten times on each voting platform: phonecall, text message, internet and Twitter. This ensures that a single person voting constantly for one candidate doesn't determine the outcome of the vote. For the full explanation of NBL voting rules, check out the Univision page.
