With the holidays behind us and only long winter days ahead of us, there is not much else to do but indulge in wine, and there is nothing like a rich red to warm you up after battling some winter weather. We understand the drill, you go to the liquor store, pick up a bottle, finally make it home; that’s when you reach for a glass, ready to pour, only to realize that you don’t have a bottle opener! Luckily, apparently we are not alone in forgetting that one ever so vital apparatus, so drinkers everywhere are discovering new ways to forego the traditional corkscrew and still find a way to get a bottle of wine open.
The latest trend in opening up bottles of wine sans corkscrew is to employ the use of a shoe. While there are some variations in techniques, there seem to be three main aspects to this opening that remain the same. First it is imperative that you remove the foil for the top of the bottle, secondly using a thick-soled shoe seems to yield the best results. And lastly, attempt to stop the cork before it is ejected fully, this way you won’t spill any wine.
Some wine drinkers have used a similar technique of knocking the cork out, but where they lacked shoes, they discovered trees. Instead of cushioning the bottle with a shoe, this technique requires a bit more patience and finesse while knocking the cork out with the soft wood of a local forest tree. While the shoe trick may be more practical, the tree technique could absolutely come in handy if camping or any other outdoor adventure.
The last trick that we propose uses a few more tools as compared to using just your shoe or backyard tree. To execute this wine opening trick you will need a screw, screwdriver, and a hammer. It’s quite simple really, and there is much less of a margin of error than other proposed bottle opening hacks. The screw is screwed securely into the cork, leaving about a ½ inch exposed, this allows for leverage in popping open the bottle of wine. Next take you hammer and using the back piece pull the screw straight up, taking the cork with it! Viola! A mess and fess free hack to opening a bottle of wine without a corkscrew.
Our next trick for opening up a bottle of wine is easier, but creates a bit of a mess. If you are willing to sacrifice cleanliness to get into that bottle, than this hack is for you. The wine can be opened simply by pushing the cork into the bottle, by using the end of a wooden spoon or even sharp knife, you can use some pressure and push the cork back in and drink the wine. Additionally some wine drinkers have opened a bottle of wine with a knife, and done so, mess free, by inserting a small-serrated knife into the cork and then twisting up, the cork should come out like if you were using a corkscrew. However, we advise caution when playing with knives and wine, so no matter what hack you use be sure to take the proper safety precautions!
