Nintendo has announced they will indeed be terminating the internet service for Wii and the DS worldwide May 20. This means gamers only have a few more months to play Wii and DS games online, play with friends via multiplayer and share in-game content or leaderboards. Nintendo has noted that this is just for the Ds and Wii and won’t affect Wii U and 3DS games. However, Joystiq reports Wii Mode won’t offer online play on the Wii U console and DS games when played on a 3DS console.
All is not bad news, two other features won’t losing any online functionality. The DSi Shop and Wii U Shop will both stay open and users will still be able to access the DS Browser and Wii channels such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. While the company did not give a reason as to why they are removing the Wi-Fi connection from the devices they did thank Nintendo fans saying, “We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company’s legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity, and the passion of Nintendo fans.”
