President Donald Trump's planned attendance at the Super Bowl 59 has prompted the NFL to remove the words "End Racism" from where it is emblazoned onto the back of an end zone, reported two sources close to the matter.
Trump is expected to attend this weekend's game at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, according to a White House official speaking to CNN. He may be joined by Speaker of the House and Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson.
Trump's anticipated attendance has prompted the NFL to make changes to the statements on the field within the Superdome for Super Bowl LIX. League officials have reportedly changed the slogan stenciled onto the back of an end zone from "End Racism" to "Choose Love", according to two sources within the League who spoke to the New York Times.
The slogan was first placed onto a Super Bowl end zone in February of 2021 and has remained constant ever since. However, it may not be present in the upcoming game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The decision to remove the slogan was allegedly motivated by recent events, including the New Year's terrorist attack on New Orleans' Bourbon Street and the recent collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines commercial jetliner in Washington D.C., said NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy.
"We felt it was an appropriate statement for what the country has collectively endured, given recent tragedies, and can serve as an inspiration," said McCarthy.
However, some have speculated that the slogan's replacement was also prompted by policies against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), which Trump opposed over the course of his campaign.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell voiced strong support for policies aimed at promoting diversity, including at the club-employment level, during the annual Super Bowl news conference on Monday.
"We got into diversity efforts because we felt it was the right thing for the National Football League," Goodell said. "And we're going to continue those efforts, because we've not only convinced ourselves we've proven it to ourselves — it does make the NFL better."
