It took a while and a lot of controversy before Deshaun Watson finally got the trade that most had been expecting.
According to reports, the Houston Texans came to terms with the Cleveland Browns for the three-time Pro Bowler.
The Browns will send three first-round picks to the Texans for Watson. These are picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Also part of the said deal is a 2023 third-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.
Aside from the 26-year-old quarterback, the Texans are also sending their 2024 first-round pick to Cleveland.
Further, the Browns are reportedly set to give Watson a five-year deal worth $230 million that is fully guaranteed.
He would receive $184 million over the first four years of his new contract -- a $48 million raise over what he was scheduled to make under his current contract according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Watson had informed the Texans he was willing to waive his no-trade clause if he would be dealt with the Browns according to unnamed sources. The 26-year-old QB would confirm this later on via Instagram, showing himself in a Browns uniform.
Texans general manager Nick Caserio stated on Friday regarding the Deshaun Watson trade, pointing out how it was the right move for the NFL team.
"Our priority right now is adding talented players to the foundation we have already put in place over the last 15 months and this trade supports that plan," he said. "As we navigate through the rest of the offseason, we remain open-minded to all avenues that allow us to improve our roster and add to our program," he said.
For the Browns, the impending arrival of Watson also means Baker Mayfield may have the chance to find a new team. He had requested a trade from Cleveland but was not accommodated.
All that has changed now following the Houston Texans-Cleveland Browns trade involving Watson and future picks.
