Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers is speculated by most to move to another NFL team this offseason. With most quarterbacks having already moved, the two-time Super Bowl champion has yet to find a suitable landing spot.
There have been rumored landing spots, including Garoppolo’s former team, the New England Patriots. But so far, Niners' general manager John Lynch has yet to agree to any of the alleged pitches.
PFT’s Mike Florio suggests that the reason why no deal has gone down is that Lynch is asking for an absurd amount before allowing the 30-year-old walk.
Lynch is allegedly telling interested teams that he has an offer from an unnamed club for a pair of second-round picks. That deal has not been made official and most assume that Lynch may want something better.
Although Garoppolo has been notorious for his injuries, it remains that other teams who are bent on acquiring the 2013 Walter Payton awardee is worth more.
Among the teams said to be interested in Garoppolo include the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers.
The Niners are expected to turn to Trey Lance as their new quarterback moving forward. However, questions remain in the air on whether the time is ripe to make that shift.
Garoppolo would have made sense for at least another season. But given the hefty price tag he carries, his tenure with the Niners may no longer make sense. Hence, dealing him away is likely with Kyle Shanahan possibly turning to other veteran but cost-friendly quarterbacks to serve in a backup capacity.
It is a risk but a certainty if the Niners want to start a new era with Lance. Garoppolo gave his best but his injury-riddled NFL seasons may be too much of a burden to bear for San Francisco.
