The San Francisco 49ers may be thanking their lucky stars that they were not able to find a trade partner for two-time Super Bowl champion Jimmy Garoppolo.
As most know, Trey Lance is out for the season after suffering a foot injury against the Seattle Seahawks. This forced the hand of Kyle Shanahan to move to the 30-year-old play-caller. And with the 22-year-old former top pick out for the season, it appears San Francisco’s fate for the season will hinge on the NFL veteran.
But to this day, pundits have been wondering how the Niners would have dealt with the season had they succeeded in trading away Garoppolo. There were reportedly interested teams but nothing came to fruition.
A Garoppolo trade was in the air after last season. But it appears that the 30-year-old’s decision to undergo shoulder surgery changed the interest of certain NFL teams.
One team that allegedly came close to sealing the deal for Garoppolo and the Niners was the Washington Commanders, ESPN reported.
The Niners allegedly believed they had a done deal but that all changed with Garoppolo deciding to undergo surgery. After that, the Commanders moved on and ended up signing Carson Wentz instead.
Garoppolo will be in focus once more after the 2022 NFL season once his contract expires. But for now, the Illinois native is expected to focus on his current campaign with the 49ers.
Last Sunday, Garoppolo went 13 of 21 for 154 yards with a touchdown, finishing with a 100.1 rating. He also had a rushing touchdown.
Garoppolo is believe to be not fully in sync with the Niners. Shanahan and company focused more on Lance, meaning adjustments may be in order.
As for Lance, he will have to wait until next season to start the Trey Lance era for the San Francisco 49ers.
