Jimmy Garoppolo will remain with the San Francisco 49ers, at least until the end of the 2022-23 NFL season.
This was after the two-time Super Bowl Champion reportedly agreed to a new deal that is way below the original $24.2 million deal he was due to make this coming NFL season.
Under the new deal, the 30-year-old play-caller will now be guaranteed $6.5 million along with various incentives that could push his earnings to $15 million, Pro Football Talk reported.
However, those earnings can only be possible if Garoppolo is to get significant playing time. Considering he will be playing backup to Trey Lance, only unforeseen circumstances such as seeing the 22-year-old quarterback getting injured or playing poorly may see the Niners turn to the veteran QB.
Also, the new contract of Garappolo includes a no-trade clause. This means that any NFL team who were linked to the 30-year-old, such as the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers, will have to wait until next offseason to make their move.
The deal also prevents the Niners from putting the franchise tag on Garoppolo once his contract expires after the coming NFL season. Hence, it appears that the 49ers have addressed all concerns pertaining to Garoppolo for the coming season.
This officially puts an end to speculations about Garoppolo’s future. Although the money he stands to make is far from what his original contract carried, it was not mentioned what triggered the sudden new deal and how the figures were arrived at.
Finally, the fact remains that there was a cloud of uncertainty hovering over Garoppolo. He is coming off off-season shoulder surgery and it remains to be seen if he can still play at the same competitive level.
Should he show the same arm and wits for the Niners with whatever playing time he gets, the story could be different in the offseason for the Illinois native.
