The San Francisco 49ers are looking good on paper for the coming NFL season although outlets continue to figure out the quarterbacking position. Jimmy Garoppolo is still around but most see Trey Lance as the future of the NFL team.
Trade rumors involving Garoppolo continue to be in the air with the New England Patriots seen as a potential landing post. But considering he is due $25 million for the coming season, all that may have to wait until next season.
San Francisco 49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco appeared recently on an episode of Sports For All Philippines and conversed with Filipino journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung. Despite suggestions that the 29-year-old could return to the Pats, the 54-year-old American sportswriter does not see it happening.
“My guess is that he remains with the 49ers this season and then let’s just let this thing play out and see how well he performs. Right now, I don’t think there is a real starting job out there for him. New England could be that spot but they are not going to pay him $25 million to come there and be the quarterback,” Maiocco said in the podcast.
However, Maiocco believes that it will reach a point where the 49ers will shift from Garoppolo to Lance. The 21-year-old is undeniably the future of the Niners and the only question right now is when will he take over from Garoppolo.
“So much can happen or can go this season. But if Garoppolo plays well and the 49ers win a lot of football games and Trey Lance shows that he can be the guy for the future, then the 49ers will have the opportunity to trade him at the end of this season,” Maiocco quipped.
As far as Maiocco is concerned, any move involving Garoppolo may happen but somewhere along the season or the end. However, he warns that there could be complications in the even San Francisco ends up making the Super Bowl and winning it all this NFL season.
“If the 49ers go to the Super Bowl, win the Super Bowl, its gonna be real tough for them to make that decision and move on from Garoppolo in the offseason. It’s really one of the fascinating storylines in the NFL and one of the more interesting times in team history I have ever seen,” he explained.
Hence, Garoppolo will have to go through the current season with that in mind and also guide the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. So far, it appears Lance is thankful for the guidance and called the two-time Super Bowl champion one of the best people he has been around with when he spoke to James Roberts of KVRR.
Beyond that, it will be interesting how things pan out. Lance is seen as the future of the Niners and all that could be made official if Garoppolo struggles or shows signs that Kyle Shanahan should change it up and give the North Dakota State a chance to show what he’s got.
