From the compact BMW 1M Coupe to the hefty BMW X6 M crossover, performance division M GmbH makes it a point to further confirm that the Bavarian auto company is the maker of the ultimate driving machines.
Inexplicably, the current generation BMW Z4 hardtop convertible, arguably one of the most deserving models of an M badge, has been conspicuously omitted from the M treatment.
Now, details have emerged on BMW's next-generation Z4. Updated to better position itself against the new Mercedes-Benz SLK and Porsche Boxster, the Z4 will not receive radical changes in exterior and interior styling, but will a healthy bump in driving performance as well as driver engagement.
One of the components BMW has been focusing on is raw power. According to reports from Autocar, the next-generation Z4 will finally mark the return of the "Z4M." The BMW Z4 M35i will replace the current range-topping, but clumsily named, Z4 sDrive 35iS. The Z4 M35i is expected to receive the same workhorse 335-hp 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-6 engine as the M135i, but BMW will focus on a more aggressive exhaust system and a more response power delivery.
In regards to handling finesse, BMW is also looking into a downsized, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that could dramatically take the weight off the nose of the car for a lighter overall package, as well as to optimize its weight distribution.
Despite the concern of polishing the vehicle without losing to much of its character, a BMW insider has told Inside Line that the upcoming roadster might lop off a bit of length from the hood. From the original Z3, to the E85, and all the way up to the current E89, the Z roadster have always been characterized by their long, grand-touring style hoods. The BMW insider assures that the brand will not do anything that will offend its current Z roadster clientele.
Expect the next Z4 to premier at the 2013 Detroit auto show in January.
