A 19-year-old aspiring surgeon was allegedly killed by her new husband who dumped her body in a bath of acid.
The remains of Aminah Hayat were allegedly found dissolving in the acid bath at the unit she shared with her partner, Meraj Zafar on Pennant Hills Rd, North Parramatta about 4.30 pm on Sunday, Jan. 30.
Hayat’s body was discovered after her family called police raising concerns about her welfare. NSW Police Superintendent Julie Boon said officers had forced entry to the unit and found Hayat’s body in the bathroom.
She was allegedly murdered between midday and 5 pm on Saturday, court records revealed. Hayat may have been slumped in the bathtub for more than a day before police found her body.
"I can confirm there were chemicals found inside the bathroom of the unit. I can't confirm what they were," Boon said.
"The scene was very challenging for arriving police. When they did arrive and found chemicals at the unit, they retreated and called other units."
Police said a manhunt was launched for the 20-year-old suspect, who was seen fleeing the scene in his truck.
On Monday, Zafar handed himself in to police and was charged with Hayat’s murder, authorities said.
"He has done the right thing in attending the police station," Zafar's lawyer, Mohamad Sakr said.
"He’s distraught about being in custody. It’s just a matter of whether he wishes to fight these charges or not, but I will obtain those instructions," he said.
According to reports, the couple decided to tie the knot just weeks before her gruesome death.
Hayat moved from Bangladesh to Australia when she was younger, before meeting Zafar and marrying him. Reports suggest Zafar had told his neighbors that he was from Pakistan.
Their relationship was reportedly disapproved by parents on both sides. The victim’s parents said they lost contact with their daughter after she moved in with Zafar.
"I want my daughter, I want my daughter," the vctim’s father, Abu Hayat told Channel Seven.
"Everyone hoped she’d become a doctor," the devastated father said. "She wanted to help people."
The cause of death is yet to be revealed as autopsy results were being awaited.
Hayat's hairdresser Sadia Ali said she was heartbroken by the tragedy.
"It's terrible news," she told Daily Mail Australia. "She was such a beautiful soul."
