The New York Daily News made waves today with its controversial cover regarding the 2013 government shutdown. The cover featured John Boehner sitting in the same position as the Frank Underwood character, played by Kevin Spacey, in the popular Netflix drama "House of Cards." Boehner is seated at the Lincoln Memorial monument with the words "House of Turds" plastered behind him while the Daily News blasts the GOP for getting paid during the national crisis. A slew of journalism blogs posted the cover, with readers torn on its effectiveness, though it appears to be drawing more laughs than not. "Yeah, the Daily News doesn't win originality points. But does it ever resonate," said reader Debra Eisert on Jim Romenesko's Facebook page.
The Daily News appears to reflecting real sentiments of the American people amidst the shutdown, as voters opposed Congress shutting down due to the Obamacare debacle carried out by House Republicans by a margin of 77-22, Slate reported. The support for Obamacare isn't as clear, with 45 percent for and 47 percent against, but a shutdown was definitely not on the radar for most voters. When it came to Congress cutting off funding for the law, voters were opposed to the idea 58 percent to 34 percent. The shutdown arrived and was supported by a margin just as narrow as public opinon on Obamacare by House Republicans, 49-44. The shutdown means nearly all government agencies will be severely understaffed until the House and the Senate can reach an agreement on spending bills. During a shutdown, however, Congress is under no obligation to act or work out resolutions.
