It has been over a month since the unfortunate shooting at the Robb Elementary School where 19 children and two teachers were left to die in their classrooms.
Now, a new video has emerged showing how officers reacted in the hallway of the school. The footage first obtained by the Austin American-Statesman showed how police ran away from the shooting rather than charging toward the 18-year-old gunman identified as Salvador Ramos.
In the 77-minute clip, it could be seen how officers ran into the school just minutes after Ramos started his rampage. But rather than confront him, some stopped and dillydallied. There was one cop spotted on the video wearing a helmet and vest using a wall-mounted hand sanitizer and also checking his phone.
Hence, this somehow affirms claims that authorities failed to take immediate action to stop the shooting despite being just yards away from the shooter.
It was only at the 77th minute when cops finally breached the classroom where Ramos was in. But by that time, Ramos had already gunned down innocent kids and teachers.
The said video is set to be released by state lawmakers on Sunday. However, officials wanted grieving families to see it first before releasing it.
However, one parent named Vincent Salazar claimed that he had not seen the video before the Statesman published it and that families of the victims felt “blindsided.”
“We all know that the [police] didn’t do their jobs, but seeing it will reaffirm that. There needs to be accountability. A lot of these people who didn’t act shouldn’t have their jobs,” Salazar said.
The video is likely to spark a new round of outrage from parents who were left devastated by the incident. Many of them waited outside the school while Ramos was shooting and were barred from entering to try and save their kids.
“Officials told families to prepare themselves to view this horrific footage on Sunday. Now, somebody leaked it,” State Sen. Roland Gutierrez stated.
