MIAMI - The ever-surprising world of Latin music has delivered a fresh set of shocks this week. Reggaeton icon Wisin ventured into Mexican music, while Mexican regional legend Pepe Aguilar released a self-penned and entirely new song, blending traditional mariachi with '80s rock.
Moreover, no one could have predicted a rap collaboration between Penélope Cruz and Residente, but this week Latin music is brimming with surprises. The Spanish actress debuted in music with "313," the focus track of Residente's new album "Las letras ya no importan."
A reggaeton artist performing salsa isn't that surprising. Maluma and Daddy Yankee, among others, have showcased their sonero skills before, but the collaboration between Jay Wheeler and uber salsa producer Sergio Georges (Marc Anthony's studio boss) is nothing short of spectacular. Also, Gente de Zona's collaboration with late salsa godess Celia Cruz is more than welcomed, heralding an exciting future for tropical music.
Selena Gomez is back in her pop girl era with her new single "Love On." This time around, the artist has ditched her celebratory single persona and embraced her new relationship status.
After a five-year hiatus from the global stage, Puerto Rican superstar Chayanne announced his new tour, set to begin in August in the U.S.
In a completely unexpected move, Peso Pluma canceled his performances in South America, including his highly controversial participation in Viña del Mar, the world's most famous Latin music festival. La Doble P cited "personal reasons," while fans speculate it's due to heartbreak following his split with Nicki Nicole and an infidelity scandal on his part.
In other touring news, sales figures for Bad Bunny's current tour are less thrilling, failing to replicate the sold-out success of his "Un verano sin ti" tour. El Conejo Malo also missed out on winning even one Premio Lo Nuestro last night. The 2024 edition of the oldest Latin music awards was dominated by La Bichota. Karol G emerged as the biggest winner, securing nine PLNs.
Also last night, Machine Gun Kelly shocked fans when he took the stage at Premio Lo Nuestro for a live performance with Don Omar of his mega hit "Danza Kuduro," while Carin León premiered his new song "The One (Pero no como yo)" with none other than country music rebel Kane Brown.
Other great collaborations this week include Wos and Gustavo Santaolalla, Feid and Lenny Tavarez, Edén Muñoz and Yuridia, and Kany García and Young Miko.
